Robot use in the security industry: even the minister is amazed

Yesterday, Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee was able to see for himself how quickly the digital transformation in the security industry is progressing.

Wolfgang Tiefensee visited a logistics centre in Erfurt for this purpose. The Thuringian Minister of Economics and Science wanted to see for himself the state of the art in security and property protection.

He was invited by the Berlin-based security specialist CIBORIUS, which recently began using two intelligent security robots in a 46,000 m2 logistics area. CIBORIUS is Germany's leading provider of robot-based networked solutions in the field of security and service. Together with its partner Security Robotics, the Berlin-based company is pursuing an innovative approach to counter the serious shortage of skilled workers in this field.

The four-legged walking robot SPOT®, which patrols every night together with its wheel-driven counterpart ARGUS, was on display in Erfurt. The robots move along fixed routes and transmit video images in real time to the emergency call and service control centre.

Both robots are equipped with high-resolution 360-degree cameras and can be equipped with PTZ cameras and other devices. This allows them to accurately detect people and objects even at great distances. If the robot detects a suspicious person, it immediately sends a corresponding signal to the control centre. Here, specially trained experts analyse the images, assess the situation and initiate appropriate measures. If necessary, the staff in the control centre can take control of the robot, for example to provide images of a fleeing perpetrator.

The two robots in Erfurt use their respective technical advantages to perform specific tasks. For example, SPOT® can move safely in the most difficult terrain, climb stairs and skilfully avoid unexpected obstacles. Even in extreme temperatures and bad weather conditions, it remains reliable in use.

Unlike ARGUS, its range is limited to small and medium-sized sites. It can inspect for up to 90 minutes without interruption. The wheel-driven ARGUS, on the other hand, is prepared for extended patrols, which it interrupts only for short stops at the charging station. But even during the charging process, the robot remains on reception and continues its surveillance.

Thus it performs its nightly work reliably like clockwork, always alert and ready to report.

At the Erfurt site, each robot is assigned to the exact area for which it is best suited. The robots work autonomously and make their decisions independently of each other. During joint operations, they are constantly learning as they immediately memorise each new situation. As a self-learning system, the robots evolve from day to day. Thanks to their high precision and energy-efficient operation, the robots increase safety and reduce costs at the same time. Even the minister is enthusiastic, saying, "An exciting combination of artificial intelligence, technology and robotics and an excellent approach in times of skills shortage."
